How to Slide Notes in FL Studio: Portamento, Pitch Bend and 808 Glides Explained

To slide notes in FL Studio, open the Piano roll, press S (or click the triangle Slide icon), and draw a slide note that overlaps the note you want to bend. The slide note’s pitch is where the sound glides to, and the overlap sets the slide time. One catch many tutorials skip: slide notes work only with FL Studio’s native instruments. This works for FL Studio’s native instruments and for samples loaded in the Channel Rack.
Pick a native instrument, or a sample in the Channel Rack, and open its Piano roll (F7 opens it).
Draw a normal note at the pitch you want to slide from.
Press S, or click the triangle Slide icon at the top left of the Piano roll.
Place the slide note so it overlaps the standard note. The slide note’s pitch is where the sound glides to. A slide note on its own, with no standard note under it, makes no sound.
Image-Line says the slide note’s length controls the rate of the pitch change, and the overlap sets the slide time. In practice, draw it longer for a slower, smoother slide and shorter for a quick one, then adjust by ear.
Double-click a note to open its properties. You can switch Slide and Porta on or off there, and edit velocity, pan and release.
Tip: if you turn it on in General settings, you can click and hold while adding a note to cycle through the slide and portamento modes. If notes overlap as a chord, FL Studio uses the topmost note as the reference for the slide.
Portamento in FL Studio: notes, Porta and Mono
Portamento is a smooth slide from one note into the next. FL Studio gives you two ways to get it, and both work only with native instruments.
Portamento notes (Piano roll)
Press O to switch on the Portamento toggle, then draw the note. FL Studio slides in pitch from the end of the previous note to the note with the portamento flag. It affects only that transition.
You can also flip Porta on a single note in its properties.
Porta or Mono for the whole channel
Open the channel settings (wrench icon), go to the MISC tab and find Polyphony. Turn on Porta to slide the pitch from note to note. Add Mono to play one note at a time, which keeps the glide clean.
The SLIDE knob sets the slide length. Turn it right for a longer slide.
Full Porta: when portamento notes are used, this option ignores the Gate time setting and plays the full note length.

How to slide 808s in FL Studio
An 808 slide uses the same tools, applied to a bass. The key is to load the 808 as a native channel so slide notes and Porta work.
Drag your 808 sample into the Channel Rack. A sample in the Channel Rack is a native channel, so slides work.
Draw the 808 note, press S, and draw a slide note that overlaps it at the pitch you want to reach. A longer overlap gives a slower slide.
In the channel settings, open the MISC tab and turn on Mono and Porta. Set the SLIDE knob, then draw notes one after another and the pitch glides between them. Mono plays one note at a time, so 808s do not stack on top of each other.
Start with a short slide, around a 1/16 note, and lengthen it until it feels right. Very long slides can blur the groove.
If your 808 is a VST or a Kontakt instrument, FL Studio’s slide notes will not work on it. Use the instrument’s own glide or legato setting, or automate its pitch (next section).
Sliding a VST instrument in FL Studio (why slide notes do not work)
This is the part many tutorials get wrong. Image-Line’s manual says slide notes and portamento notes only work with native FL Studio instruments, not VST instruments. Its support page says it plainly: “VST plugins only support per-note velocity. VST plugins do not support per-note automation for other listed parameters in FL Studio’s Piano Roll nor do they support slide notes.”
You still have three good options.
Image-Line’s advice is to automate the channel pitch. Right-click the channel’s pitch knob, choose Create automation clip, then draw the curve in the Playlist where you want the slide. The catch: it bends every note on that channel while the curve moves, so put slides on their own channel.
Most synths and many instruments have a Glide, Porta or Legato control. Because it is part of the plugin’s sound engine, it works in any DAW and does not depend on FL Studio’s slide notes.
If a lead only needs one or two slides, a native instrument or a sample with slide notes may be quicker.
Checked 20 September 2026. The FL Studio 2026 release notes we read do not list a change to slide notes on VSTs. If Image-Line adds it in a later update, use that first.
Instruments with built-in glide: skip the drawing

Glissando vs portamento vs pitch bend
The words overlap in everyday use, so here is a quick way to tell them apart.

Do not worry about the exact word. What matters is where you control the slide: per note (slide notes), per transition (portamento notes) or per channel (Porta or automation).
Slide notes not working? Quick fixes
A slide note must overlap a standard note. On its own it makes no sound.
Slide notes and portamento notes work only on native instruments. Automate the pitch, or use the plugin’s own glide.
When notes overlap as a chord, FL Studio uses the topmost note as the reference. Slide from single notes, or put the slide on its own channel.
Turn off Porta in the channel’s MISC tab, or remove the portamento flag from the note.

5 tips to make slides sound musical
A slide on every note gets tiring. Keep it for the notes you want to stand out, such as the end of a phrase.
A slide that lasts a 1/16 or 1/8 note feels tight. A slide that lasts a beat or more feels dramatic.
If the slide ends between scale notes it can sound out of tune. Target a note that belongs to your key.
Small velocity changes make a slide feel played rather than drawn.
Short, quick slides into a note are the heart of Arabic and Balkan melodies. Try them on flutes, violins and plucked instruments.
