Free accordion VST 64-bit warning: the older free plugin Accordion by Safwan Matni is a 1.4 MB Windows VST in 32-bit format only. It has about a 4.0 out of 5 rating across 448 votes, but users report problems in 64-bit DAWs. It can still be worth a try if your host is 32-bit or you use a bridge.

How to choose an accordion VST
Five questions that decide it.
French musette, Gypsy jazz, Balkan folk and oriental music all ask for different accordions. Match the plugin's character to your genre before anything else.
Kontakt libraries such as Le Parisien and Gypsy Squeezebox need Kontakt (Le Parisien needs the full version). Accordions 2 needs Best Service Engine 2. Balkan Plugin, Akkordica and Harmonus 300 are standalone plugins that load in any DAW.
Look for registers, a bass system, bellows or expression control, round robins and key noises. Dedicated libraries list these. Broader palettes trade some of that depth for range.
Balkan and oriental melodies rely on slides, glides and, often, scales between the piano keys. Check for glide and microtuning. Balkan Plugin includes both.

How to make any accordion VST sound real
These six habits matter more than the plugin you pick.
Play short bass notes and chords low on the beat, and the melody higher up. Accordion parts sound wrong when everything is one block chord.
Real accordions swell and fade with the bellows. If the plugin responds to it, automate expression (often CC11) with gentle rises and falls on each phrase.
Bellows pressure shapes the dynamics, so wild velocity changes sound artificial. Small, uneven variations feel more human.
Grace notes, quick trills and slides into a note are the heart of Balkan and oriental accordion. A plugin with glide, such as Balkan Plugin's Balkan Glide, makes them easy to play.
Many oriental scales use notes between the piano keys. Use a plugin with microtuning so the melody sounds right instead of slightly off.
Leave small timing differences and overlap legato notes slightly. Then add a touch of room reverb and cut the low rumble under the melody.
