What makes an Arabic VST sound Arabic?
Five things decide whether a plugin sounds Middle Eastern or just “exotic”.
Look for the oud, qanun (kanun), ney or oriental flutes, and rababa or Arabic violin, plus percussion such as darbuka, riq and daf. A pad called “Arabic” is not the same as a recorded oud.
Many maqamat, including Rast, Bayati and Sikah, use notes between the piano keys. A plugin that plays only 12 equal notes forces you to bend by hand. Built-in microtunings, or a tool such as MicroToner, fix that.
Arabic melodies live in slides, grace notes and trills. Check for glide or legato control, or a long list of articulations, because a note that just switches on and off sounds Western.
Arabic percussion changes the whole groove. A drum expansion or pattern set with darbuka, riq and daf saves hours of layering samples by hand.

Arabic scales in 60 seconds (and which ones need quarter tones)
You do not need the theory to start, but one fact saves a lot of frustration: some Arabic scales fit a normal keyboard, and some do not. Hijaz (the same set of notes as the Phrygian dominant scale) and Nahawand work on the piano keys. Rast, Bayati, Saba and Sikah use quarter tones, which are notes between the keys.

How to make an Arabic VST sound right in trap, drill and reggaeton
Six habits that matter more than the plugin you pick.
They fit any keyboard, so you get an Arabic vibe from your first phrase without touching quarter tones.
Play short two-to-four note phrases on oud or kanun, then rest. Trap needs room for the 808 and the hi-hats.
Slides and grace notes carry the emotion. Use a glide or legato control, and let your melody slides follow your 808 glides.
Use an oud or kanun for the attack, then add an oriental flute or ney line an octave higher, quieter, for air.
Ethnic instruments carry a lot of body. High-pass your Arabic layers around 150 Hz so the 808 stays clean.
Layer darbuka, riq or daf over your trap hats, and keep velocities uneven. Do not quantize ornaments to the grid.
